International Desk: Tensions Escalate as Israel Launches Airstrikes on Iran’s Nuclear Sites; India Issues Advisory, Airspace Closed The conflict between Israel and Iran sharply escalated after the Israeli military launched preemptive airstrikes on Iranian territory, including a major attack on Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility. The strikes were aimed at neutralizing what Israel described as an “immediate and existential threat” posed by Iran’s advancing nuclear capabilities.
Israel’s Response
Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Brigadier General Efi Defrin stated that the strikes were precise and intended to damage Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and respond to Iran’s growing aggression toward Israel. He claimed that intelligence reports indicated Iran was closer than ever to acquiring a nuclear weapon.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog supported the operation, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Iran’s regime is leading a global terrorist empire and expanding its ballistic missile arsenal. Israel has acted to defend itself against a looming threat.”
Defence Minister Yoav Gallant declared a state of emergency, while the Israeli government confirmed that residential areas were not targeted, despite Iranian accusations.
Iran Vows Retaliation
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed severe punishment for Israel, accusing it of committing crimes on Iranian soil and attacking civilian areas. Iranian state media reported that thick black smoke was seen rising from the Natanz site following powerful explosions.
In response to the attacks, Iran has closed its airspace until further notice. The Iranian Civil Aviation Organization issued a NOTAM, effectively halting all commercial flight activity across the country.
Impact on Indian Travelers
Following the airspace closure, Air India has diverted or returned flights bound for or passing through Iranian airspace. The airline announced that full refunds would be issued for cancelled flights and alternative travel arrangements are being made for affected passengers.
Indian Embassy Issues Advisory
The Indian Embassy in Israel has issued a safety advisory for Indian nationals residing in Israel. It urges citizens to stay alert, follow safety protocols issued by Israeli authorities and the Home Front Command, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay near secure shelters.
U.S. Reaction
In light of the developments, former U.S. President Donald Trump, currently in office, has called a National Security Council meeting to discuss the implications of Israel’s strikes on Iran and the broader regional consequences.
