Himachal Desk: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed unusually heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides this year, and experts say the key reason is the global climate phenomenon La Niña.
🌊 What is La Niña?
La Niña occurs when the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean near the equator become colder than normal. This shift alters global wind patterns and strengthens the Indian monsoon.
☔ Impact on India and Himachal Pradesh
During La Niña years, India generally receives above-normal monsoon rainfall. Moisture-laden winds grow stronger, causing intense downpours, cloudbursts, and floods, especially in hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and the Northeast.
This year, Himachal Pradesh experienced the brunt of La Niña’s impact, with widespread heavy rains triggering floods and landslides, severely affecting life and infrastructure.
