Punjab Desk: Under the ongoing efforts under the campaign on paddy residue management, PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur conducted an awareness programme for mobilization of college students to curb the practice of paddy residue burning at Govt. College, Hoshiarpur on 12-9-2025.
At the outset, Major Gurmeet Singh, Principal, Govt. College, Hoshiarpur, welcomed the experts from KVK and lauded the efforts of KVK for creating awareness regarding non burning of paddy residue. He also assured full support of the students in furthering this noble cause.
While addressing the students, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Incharge, PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur discussed about the harmful effects of burning of crop residue burning and also informed about the various nutrients available in the paddy residue and their importance for the soil health. He gave a brief overview of the recommended paddy residue management technologies and also highlighted the use of paddy straw in biogas plants, use as fuel & energy, use in mushroom cultivation and as fodder. Dr. Bons encouraged the students to participate in various competitions that were to be organized regarding paddy residue management campaign and also to act as ambassadors to spread this noble message of non burning of paddy residue in every section of the society.
On this occasion, PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur conducted declamation, essay writing and painting competition for the college students for sensitization regarding the harmful effects of paddy residue to the environment, soil health, human health and society. The students enthusiastically participated in the different competitions with great vigour. The winners of the various competitions were also awarded for boosting their competitive spirit by the guests.
A jagrukta rally was also organized by the college students to create awareness for shunning the practice of paddy residue burning.
The competitions were arranged under the guidance of Dr. Sukhdeep Kaur, Assistant Professor (Home Science) & Ms. Sunita, Programme Assistant (Lab. Technician), PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur and the staff of Department of Zoology, Govt. College, Hoshiarpur, Ms. Prabhjot Kaur, HOD, Dr. Sandeep Kaur, Asstt. Professor and Mrs. Amritdeep Kaur, Asstt. Professor.
