Himachal Desk: A massive landslide in the Jangambag area of Sundernagar subdivision, Mandi district (Himachal Pradesh), claimed seven lives, including four members of a family, on Tuesday evening. The sudden collapse buried two residential houses and also trapped a passerby.
According to Mandi SP Sakshi Verma, residents reported hearing a loud rumbling just before the hillside gave way, sweeping away homes at its base. Despite difficult conditions, six bodies were recovered by late Tuesday night, while the seventh was found on Wednesday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Gurpreet Singh (35), his wife Bharti (30), daughter Kirat (3), grandmother Shanti Devi (70), Surender Kaur (56), and a man riding a scooty who remains unidentified. Another passerby was also among the victims.
Rescue efforts involved teams from the NDRF, SDRF, DDMA, and local police, working overnight under challenging weather. The operation was monitored on-site by Mandi Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan and Additional District Magistrate Dr. Madan Kumar. As a precaution, nearby houses were vacated due to the risk of further landslides.
Leaders across the state, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut, and Sundernagar MLA Rakesh Jamwal, expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
Meanwhile, the meteorological department has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in parts of Mandi, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Kinnaur, along with a yellow alert for Una and Bilaspur districts.
