Punjab Desk: Deputy Director Animal Husbandry Dr. Sukhwinder Singh informed that as per the directions of Cabinet Minister Gurmit Singh Khudian and Principal Secretary Rahul Bhandari, breeding of dangerous breeds of dogs in Punjab will be stopped as per Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules 2017 and Pet Shops Rules 2018. Apart from this, it has been made mandatory for all the pet shops and dog breeders in Punjab who are engaged in the business of selling or buying pets to get their firm registered by the Animal Welfare Board Punjab. He said that this law is also applicable to online purchase and sale of pets and this will help in controlling unethical practices during pet breeding and purchase and sale.
He said that if anyone does this business illegally without registration, legal action will be taken against him and a prescribed fine will be imposed. He said that pet shops and dog breeders are appealed to contact the nearest veterinary hospital or dispensary to get registered. He said that in view of many dangerous breeds, this decision was very necessary so that public safety could be ensured. He said that these rules have not only been made for the welfare of animals, but it is also very important to follow them keeping in mind human safety. He appealed to the citizens of the district that any person should purchase pets like puppies, cats, rabbits, pet birds etc. only from pet shops and dog breeders registered with the Animal Welfare Board, Punjab.
