–STUBBLE MANAGEMENT: BROTHERS OF KOTHE SURJITPURA SET PRECEDENCE
–DUO CULTIVATE 100 ACRES, HAVEN’T SET PADDY STUBBLE ON FIRE FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS

Barnala, October 3 ,2025 Fact Recorder
Punjab Desk:  The farmer brothers of village Kothe Surjitpura in Barnala district have set a precedence for other farmers to emulate. The owner of 100 acres of land, Sukhpal Singh and his brother Tarsem Singh are managing paddy stubble without burning for the past 5 years. The brothers cultivate potatoes in 75 acres of area.
Farmer Sukhpal Singh said that the duo have not set their paddy stubble on fire for the past 5 years. Earlier, they used to make bales of the stubble and since 2024 they have started mixing the stubble into fields. Last year using agriculture implements like mulcher and plough MB, Sukhpal and Tarsem mixed the stubble into fields. It helped them increase the yield of potatoes. The potato yield was around 250 to 300 bags (each bag containing 50 Kg), which has now increased to 350 bags per acre.
Sukhpal added that using mulcher and plough MB, they sowed the wheat and did not face any problem. Rather their yield has increased. He added that a large number of farmers from Kothe Surjitpura are managing stubble without burning it.
Deputy Commissioner T Benith had paid a visit to the fields of Sukhpal and Tarsem and appreciated their work. He called upon these farmers to help other farmers too. Putting paddy stubble on fire not only kills farmer friendly insects, but also adversely affects the human lives and other organisms.
Farmer Sukhpal Singh added that besides potato, the duo also cultivate moong, maize and watermelons. They cultivate wheat in some area. The brothers supply potatoes to Haldiram and other such firms for food processing.
