On-the-spot fines will be imposed for smoking in public places – Civil Surgeon

Punjab Desk: Today, Ferozepur Rural MLA Rajnish Dahiya released an awareness banner for the anti-tobacco campaign under the “Tobacco Free Youth Campaign” of the Health Department and also appealed to the Panch Sarpanchs to work hard to make the village tobacco free. At the time of releasing this awareness banner, Dr. Manmeet Singh School Health Officer, District Mass Media Officer from the Health Department Sanjeev Sharma and Deputy Mass Media Officer Ankush Bhandari were also present.
Civil Surgeon Ferozepur Dr. Rajwinder Kaur said on this occasion that the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act-2003, which is applicable across the country, is being implemented properly, all government buildings-offices etc. are being declared smoke-free and ‘Smoking-free areas’ boards are being displayed and guidelines have also been given after discussing with the members of the task force regarding issuing challans to those who violate the act.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma and Deputy Mass Media Officer Ankush Bhandari said that action is being taken under Section 4 and Section 6 of the COTPA Act to issue challans to those smoking in public places like bus stands, railway stations, banks, markets, parks and hotels-dhabas etc. and to stop the sale of tobacco near educational institutions.
He informed that under the supervision of District Nodal Officer Dr. Amarvir Singh Sidhu, awareness activities are being organized in the villages of the block and city of Ferozepur for smooth implementation of the “Tobacco Free Youth Campaign” and fines are also being collected on the spot by issuing challans to the violators. On this occasion, the Health Department directed all the offices to be declared tobacco free and to display awareness boards.
