Punjab Desk: During a field visit by the Agriculture Department team to Malerkotla Block, progressive farmer Mr. Preetpal Singh of Daulatpur village has presented an excellent example of environment-friendly farming by in-situ management of paddy stubble on his 10 acres of land.
Progressive farmer Preetpal Singh said that after harvesting the paddy, he mixed the straw in the field itself using the Super Straw Management System (Super SMS) and a mulcher machine. This way, he did not have to burn the straw, which saved him from air pollution and also improved the quality of the soil. The progressive farmer, Daulatpur, says that “Burning the straw is our own loss. Mixing it with the soil with the help of machinery is the best option.
He said that mixing straw with the soil maintains soil moisture, increases microbial activity, and reduces the need for fertilizers. This technique not only reduces costs but also improves crop yield.
Officials of the Agriculture Department praised Preetpal Singh’s efforts during the visit and said that this method is a viable model of agriculture for the future, which is also providing economic benefits to the farmers and ensuring environmental protection.
Agriculture Development Officer Lajinder Singh said, “There are various types of machines and subsidies available from the government for stubble management. If farmers adopt these techniques, they can make agriculture pollution-free, profitable and sustainable.” This success story shows how farmers of Punjab are achieving both environmental protection and economic strength by adopting modern farming systems. This effort of Preetpal Singh is a source of inspiration for other farmers that the fertility potential of fields can be increased by managing stubble instead of burning it. He further said that in this way, this positive trend towards stubble management in Block Malerkotla is proving to be a milestone in taking Punjab towards a clean, green and pollution-free farming system.
