Makhu/Zira, 06 August 2025 Fact Recorder
Punjab Desk: Due to heavy monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh, the water level in the Sutlej River has risen, leading to potential flood-like conditions in the nearby villages of Ferozepur district. To assess the situation, Deputy Commissioner Deeptishikha Sharma visited the villages of Ruknewala and Gatta Badshah, where she reviewed the river water level and the strength of the embankments. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Zira, Gurmeet Singh, was also present during the visit.
The Deputy Commissioner assured that the district administration has made all necessary preparations to deal with any flood-like situation and to safeguard the lives and property of the people. She noted that in 2023, these villages were severely affected by floods, which is why precautionary measures are being taken in advance this year to avoid any unfortunate incidents.
She further stated that, due to heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, the water levels of both the Beas and Sutlej rivers have increased. However, the situation remains under control for now. She emphasized that if the water levels rise further and lead to a flood situation, the district administration is fully prepared with all necessary arrangements already in place.
During the visit, she interacted with residents of Ruknewala village, listened to their concerns, and directed officials from the concerned departments to reinforce the embankments using sandbags and machinery to ensure that rising water levels do not cause problems for the villagers. She also appealed to local residents to support the administration in strengthening the embankments.
The Deputy Commissioner mentioned that in preparation for the 2025 monsoon season, meetings were held in advance with officials from all concerned departments. Arrangements such as boats, life jackets, floodlights, and searchlights have already been made. Additionally, flood control rooms and temporary shelters have been identified and established both at the district and sub-divisional levels.
Officials from various departments were also present on this occasion.
