Office of District Public Relations Officer, Batala Special Tour by Joint Director (Cash Crops) to Review Urea Fertilizer Distribution
Batala, 22 July 2025 FACT RECORDER
Punjab Desk: Farmers have been using urea fertilizer in their paddy crops, which has increased the demand for urea fertilizer. To review the distribution of urea fertilizer in Gurdaspur district, Joint Director (Cash Crops) Dr. Tejpal Singh conducted a special tour. During this visit, inspections of documents and warehouses related to wholesale fertilizer dealers were carried out in Batala and other parts of the district. Present on the occasion were Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Amrik Singh, Agriculture Officer Dr. Parmbir Singh Kahlo, Tilak Raj, Amit Kumar, and Parveen Kumar.
The main purpose of this inspection was to review the supply of urea fertilizer by wholesale dealers to retail dealers within the district, ensuring that farmers do not face any difficulties in obtaining urea fertilizer. After inspecting the warehouse of wholesale dealer Agarwal and Sons, Dr. Tejpal Singh stated that some videos circulating on social media show farmers applying urea fertilizer to paddy and maize crops in unscientific ways, which is completely wrong.
Through the media, he appealed to farmers to remain cautious about the unscientific methods of fertilizer application being spread on social media and to use fertilizers according to the recommendations of agricultural universities and experts. He emphasized that excessive use of urea fertilizer does not increase crop yield but rather causes harm.
Dr. Tejpal Singh advised farmers to contact their block agricultural officers for more information on fertilizer use. He also urged farmers to check the MRP of fertilizers before purchase and to always take a receipt (bill) for the fertilizers bought. Warning the fertilizer dealers, he said that black marketing and hoarding of urea fertilizer will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Amrik Singh informed that by 31 July, the total requirement of urea fertilizer is 77,000 tons, and so far about 74,723 tons have been received by cooperative and private agencies. He mentioned that farmers who have already used urea once can spray nano urea on their crops, but nano urea spraying should be done 45 days after transplanting the paddy.
He recommended that for paddy crops, 90 kilograms of urea per acre should be applied in three equal installments: the first installment 7 days after transplanting, the second 21 days after transplanting, and the third 42 days after transplanting, along with irrigation.
