Punjab Desk: “Incorporate straw into the field for sustainable agriculture” – Dr. Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR, New Delhi
A one-day seminar and field exhibition on paddy stubble management was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana at Dirba’s adopted village Diwangarh Kemper. More than 60 farmers from Kemper village and nearby villages participated in the seminar.
Dr. Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi attended the event as the Chief Guest while Dr. Parvendra Sheron, Director, ICAR-Attari, Zone-1, Ludhiana attended the event as the Special Guest.
Interacting with the farmers during the seminar, Dr. Rajbir Singh stressed on the need for widespread adoption of paddy straw management techniques in the field for sustainable agriculture and environmental protection. Dr. Parvendra Sheron highlighted the need for efficient use of straw management machinery made available to farmers and custom hiring centers under the CRM project.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, Incharge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, gave detailed information about the information, education and communication activities being carried out under CRM Project. He motivated the farmers to give up the practice of burning paddy stubble and explained about its harmful effects.
Farmers expressed their concerns about the high cost of subsidized stubble management machinery, low availability of baler machines to remove stubble from the field, baler owners providing services outside the villages and imposing baling charges. They also expressed concern about the possibility of pink bollworm attack in wheat. Scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra shared detailed information about its prevention.
On the occasion of this seminar, teams from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur and Patiala provided technical information about Rabi crops to the farmers. Officials from the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Sangrur were also specially present during the event. The village gram panchayat honored the chief guest and special guest and assured them not to burn paddy stubble.
Finally, Dr. Sunil Kumar and Dr. Rukinder Preet Singh successfully demonstrated the live demonstration of Happy Seeder, Smart Seeder and Mulcher for sowing wheat in paddy stubble in the field of S. Makhan Singh. Sarpanch S. Gursewak Singh, S. Gurcharan Singh, S. Kuldeep Singh and S. Gurpreet Singh worked hard to make the event a success.
