Higher Education and Language Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains Reviews the Functioning of Punjab Language Department

Assures Timely Reports from Other Departments Regarding the Needs of the Language Department

Punjab’s Higher Education and Language Minister S. Harjot Singh Bains reviewed the functioning of the Language Department, Punjab during a meeting with the department’s Director, S. Jaswant Singh Zafar. Mr. Bains assessed the department’s ongoing work on the digitization of rare and valuable books, calling it a commendable effort to preserve precious literary resources and make them accessible to Punjabis across the globe.

He also appreciated the department’s initiatives of providing high-quality reading material to Punjabi language enthusiasts through e-books, audiobooks, and dictionaries via its official website. Additionally, he lauded the department’s campaign to implement Punjabi language in higher government offices under the State Language Act.

Mr. Bains emphasized the importance of continuing the department’s ongoing workshops and technical activities to strengthen Punjabi language in the field of Artificial Intelligence. He stated that under the current government’s tenure, the department has undertaken several remarkable initiatives, and assured full support from the government to ensure their continuation.

He also appreciated the department’s efforts in resolving long-pending projects and suggested increasing recorded interactions with renowned writers, to be shared via social media, so the youth could become more engaged with literature. Mr. Bains further suggested organizing major literary events outside Punjab, so that the next generations of Punjabis living abroad remain connected to their language and culture.

He appealed to Punjabis to develop a culture of gifting books on various occasions, to promote reading and book culture.

On this occasion, Director of the Language Department S. Jaswant Singh Zafar presented a written report to Mr. Bains, highlighting key departmental issues, including the need to speed up the recruitment process for vacant posts, address pending printing work of valuable books and departmental journals, and concerns related to the Sahitya Sadan. In response, Mr. Bains assured that all highlighted issues would be addressed by seeking prompt reports from the concerned departments and taking necessary action.

He also issued directions to hold an early meeting with the concerned department regarding book printing matters.
