In a packed day of action at the French Open, several top seeds faced tough challenges, while others produced stunning upsets.

China’s Olympic champion and 8th seed Zheng Qinwen cruised past Emiliana Arango with a straight-sets win, 6-2, 6-3. Meanwhile, Italy’s Matteo Gigante caused a major upset by defeating 20th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain had to work hard in his second-round match, overcoming Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Notably, Marozsan had previously defeated Alcaraz once in their earlier encounter.

Norway’s 7th seed Casper Ruud, a two-time French Open finalist, saw his campaign end in the second round after a surprising 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, 0-6 loss to Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

Alcaraz also achieved a significant milestone — becoming the second-fastest player in the Open Era (since 2000) to win 20 matches at Roland Garros, reaching the mark in just 23 matches, behind only Rafael Nadal.

In women’s singles, 4-time French Open champion and 5th seed Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated England’s Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-2. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus also advanced to the third round with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win over Jil Teichmann.

Last year’s finalist, Jasmine Paolini of Italy, moved on by beating Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović 6-3, 6-3.

Another upset came from João Fonseca, who knocked out 30th seed Hubert Hurkacz 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round.
